UPDATE: The shooter is being identified as Bryce Williams aka Vester Flanigan and he has reportedly shot himself on I-66 in Virginia and is in very critical condition. Now removed from Facebook, Bryce posted comments claiming that Alison Parker was racist and that Adam Ward went to HR on him after working together one time. Bryce also pathetically posted a video of him approaching the news crew prior to the shooting.

As a journalist, it’s tough to report a story as terrible as this. Earlier today (August 26), a journalist named Alison Parker, 24, and a photographer named Adam Ward, 27, both members of Virginia news station WDBJ, were shot and killed during a live broadcast.

Alison was interviewing a woman in Franklin County, VA, covering a local story when shots rang out around 6:45am, according to CNN. In the video, you can see Alison and the woman she was interviewing scream as soon as the shots were fired and at the same time, the camera fell to the ground and for a very brief moment you can see the gunmen point the gun towards the lens. The video quickly cut back to the news anchor who was in complete shock, just as everyone watching was.

According to CNN, WDBJ’s general manager Jeff Marks says this came out of nowhere and that the gunmen fired six or seven shots. “We do not know the motive. We do not know who the killer is,” Marks said. “We do know the Franklin County sheriff … they are working very diligently to track down both the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime against two fine journalists.”

The staff at WDBJ had nothing but amazing things to say about their colleagues as they were holding back tears during the broadcast. One of the anchors mentioned that Alison was engaged and also said that Alison recently told her, “I’m going to get out of news. I think I’m going to do something else.”

The gunmen is still at large and police are currently searching for him. As more information becomes available, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Our condolences go out to the WDBJ family, Alison Parker’s family and Adam Ward’s family. Rest in Peace.
