R. Kelly

It’s that time in the music year where I as both a music enthusiast and a Chicagoan am weary of, the roll out of a new R. Kelly album. The legendary singer is heading toward Buffet and the last couple of releases give me some skepticism of what we will receive from Kells.

The gift and curse of being a R.Kelly fan is the man is so gifted that he can make anything from traditional R&B with a sprinkle of steppin’ magic to hip-hop to gospel to today’s trap & b. With this upcoming album we need Kells to be a man of one specific genre and keep it straight up to the tradition. We need the “R in R&B,” not “Marry the P*ssy” Kells that Nick Young loves. He’s cool, but nah.

There is no denying that R.Kelly is at his best when he is singing about the love of a woman, the dysfunctions in relationships that men must attempt to right, a little bit of sex and some extra love on the dance floor, all sound that were rare on the Black Panties album. We need that back.

First, R. Kelly you are knocking on the door of 50, those pictures of you wearing Trukfit before hopping on stage getting ready to sing your latest DJ Mustard produced single pull you away from your core fans. Kells, we know you man. We love what you give us an will support it either way but we do know what pleases our ears the most and Black Panties is a deep fan after thought.

Also, let’s take a look at another our true R&B artist, Tyrese took an independent album of glorious grown man music to number one on the charts, showing that their is a place in music for that classic sound. Why not continuing the charge? As one of the most talented artists that we have ever seen we could use that power of your name and talent to continue that push of giving us more of the R&B we deserve. The idea that the genre is dying is false, it’s alive and well and always welcoming some new work from one of the masters.

So why is R.Kelly dancing around in different avenues? Who knows. There is proof that soul music still sells and we would love for him to touch that area again. Let’s just hop the Maze featuring Frankie Beverly-esque “Backyard Party” won’t be the only touch into classic Kells we receive on Buffet.
