Hip-hop is a fascinating cultural movement, from the humble beginnings in the Bronx, to the multi-million dollar a year industry it is today, and everything in between. But, yet there’s still so much to learn from the genre.

Over the years, there’s been a ton of hip-hop related documentaries that have helped the kids and young adults truly understand where their favorite rappers came from. In addition to that, it allowed us as fans to understand the culture the way that it was meant to be interpreted.

Take Byron Burt’s Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes for example, which brought awareness to the existing issues in the hip-hop culture beyond the music. Fast-forward to the the Straight Outta Compton film debuting next week (August 14) — a film that revisits the golden age of the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A.

A common theme amongst your average hip-hop documentary is the discussion of world issues and how hip-hop played a role and adapted to them. This adds depth to our culture and adds credibility to the genre we’ve all grown to love.

With that being said, we’ve decided to pinpoint 10 hip-hop documentaries you need to see if you haven’t already. See if you can watch all these before seeing Straight Outta Compton next week.
