It’s been exactly two months since the tragic murder of rapper Chinx, and the hip-hop community still hasn’t healed the wounds of his death. While the thought of his loss is a somber one, the outcome of his legacy has just sprung a new, hopeful beginning.

Last night, Stage 48 was breathing with excitement and good vibes as family, peers, and supporters of the late Far Rockaway native gathered for his debut album’s listening session in NYC. Welcome To JFK was supposed to be the first studio LP that Chinx would share with the music community, and more important of all, his city.

Walking in to the venue, it wasn’t hard to spot those closest to him, as his 4-year-old son, Vince, can be seen next to his mother, who is Chinx’s wife. Despite the painful loss, he is smiling from ear-to-ear as he is greeted by tons of loved ones, who even take turns playing with him throughout the evening. It’s a bittersweet sight, as everyone understands the hard road ahead for little Vince, but there is clearly an overwhelming amount of love and care to hold him down when needed.

This closeness, dedication, and love sets up a hopeful ambiance to the room, which is taken to an even higher level once host Shaheem Reid takes the mic. Speaking on the album, the culture-influencer dubs it a “classic” to the attentive crowd, with others remarking on the notable hard work Chinx had put into it before his passing. There are even reflective moments of his starting days, and how he has kept his humble attitude from his humble beginnings. Although there is a sadness in the room, it’s soon revealed that Chinx has enough material to fill out 10 more albums. The legacy is far from over.
