The last two years (in particular) have been filled with hate, anger, and bloodshed in our communities nationwide. We’ve had many music artists in the hip hop community touch on racial issues, self-love and civil rights movements (Talib Kweli, Nas, Killer Mike, etc.)… but in pop culture, it’s not too common to have an artist touch on those hot topics, educate, all while creating a solution towards peace. That’s where Kendrick Lamar comes in.

Lamar’s words serve as a wake up call to not only himself, but to anyone listening. Now, don’t get me wrong: Kendrick is human just like you and me. But take a second and read a poem he wrote to himself (via To Pimp A Butterfly): “I remember you was conflicted, misusing your influence,” he says. “Abusing my power, full of resentment. Resentment that turned into a deep depression…” K. Dot consistently gives us the motivation to overcome our personal demons and he has a way of bringing love, peace and hope into our environments.

Unfortunately, not everyone understands Kendrick.

A week ago, the “Money Trees” MC opened up the BET Awards spitting verses from his empowering single “Alright,” while on top of a vandalized police car, adding life and excitement to his set. The next day, Fox News reporter Geraldo Rivera (along with the rest of his ignorant peers) attacked Kendrick for his “unhelpful lyrics.” He went on to say, “This is why I say that hip-hop has done more damage to young African-Americans than racism in recent years,” he added. “This is exactly the wrong message.”
