Our very own Karen Civil has just partnered up with Nielsen for their #BlackMusicTBT Campaign for the month of June as part of the Nielsen Knows Conscious Consumer Campaign.

Karen will host the #BlackMusicTBT Twitter chat via her Twitter account (@KarenCivil) taking place on June 30th, where participants will learn some fun facts about African-American music culture, have your questions answered by Karen and also have the chance to win some great prizes at the end. The focus will be on how online radio has kept black music relevant through the last few decades, something we all know to be true.

To further prove the relevance and importance of online radio to the African American community, read some statistics pulled from Nielsen below:

• 31 million African-Americans (91.5%) listen to the radio every week

• African-Americans listen to the radio on average of 12 hours per week

• 61% of radio is experienced outside the home, during work, or in the car

• 31% of Blacks use a PC Laptop to listen to music, the second-most popular device after the radio

• 33.3% of African-Americans use YouTube as a music source for non-paid streaming services, followed by Pandora (24.7%) and 5.9% of African-Americans subscribe to services such as Pandora One and Spotify Premium.

• 34% of African-Americans say their favorite genre is R&B, followed by gospel (14%), hip-hop (13%) rap (6%), and smooth jazz (4%)

The #BlackMusicTBT Twitter chat hosted by Karen & Nielsen will take place on June 30th from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM (CT). In order to win the special prizes that will be given at the end, you must follow Nielsen on Twitter (@NielsenKnows) and on Facebook (Nielsen Community) and of course engage in the Twitter chat using the hashtag #BlackMusicTBT.

See ya on June 30th for an important and exciting discussion about African-American music!
