The trial date for the six Baltimore police officers indicted in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray will begin on October 13 and motion hearing scheduled for September 2. The Baltimore Sun reports Judge Barry G. Williams, a former city prosecutor and a strict civil rights lawyer, will preside over the case.

Appointed on Monday, Williams will rule over the officers who have all entered not-guilty pleas and asked for jury trial, missing the arraignments that would be held next week.

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby is looking forward to having Judge Williams preside over the case stating, “”The defendants have all entered not guilty pleas, which is their right. All defendants in this case are presumed innocent, until, or unless they are found guilty.”

Judge Williams has been the associate judge in Baltimore Circuit Court since 2005 and was the leader of the criminal division from 2012 until this past January while also serving as the Chairman for the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council from 2012 until 2014. Williams has been stated as “a no-nonsense, fair and practical judge who will no doubt control that courtroom.”

Judge Williams has no comment due to not being able to speak on the case and defense attorneys declined statements or were not available.
