With all that’s going on in our country, as well as around the world, it seems like music is one thing we can all count on. Between the numerous cases of police brutality, and the intense protests following, many artists have either spoken out, or have used their craft to bring awareness or peace.

For Jazmine Sullivan — she’s doing both. Her vocals have been spreading like wildfire after doing a powerful rendition of Nina Simone’s “Baltimore” for the legend’s documentary. “It’s just so weird that it’s so timely with what’s going on,” says the talented singer, in reference to the song’s correlation with the issues in Baltimore.

Having just wrapped up her Reality Show Tour in honor of her most recent album, the “Mascara” singer is gearing up to take the Essence Festival stage this summer where she will be tributing to her “idol,” Kim Burrell. Her power moves don’t stop there, as Jazmine is also set to give her fans a special duet with Brandy soon, conducted by Kandi Burruss.

From her thoughts on the Baltimore uprising, to battling low self-esteem, check out our conversation with Jazmine on the following pages. –Lindsey India
