This summer, A$AP Rocky will be hitting the silver screen with a lead role in the Rick Famuyiwa-directed (The Wood, Brown Sugar, Our Family Wedding) film, Dope. While the trailer doesn’t give much away, we can tell you the movie is said to be about a kid who grows up in Inglewood, California during the golden era years of hip-hop.

Dope was a critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival. Main character, Malcolm (Shameik Moore), is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT exams. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being “dope”, to ultimately being himself. Forest Whitaker narrates the coming of age story, starring big names such as Zoë Kravitz, Tyga, Casey Veggies, Roger Guenveur Smith, and more.
