Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke

The U.S. District Court has decided Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams have infringed on “Got to Give It up,” a song by the late Marvin Gaye. The AP reports the duo will need to pay $7.3 million to the Gaye estate, the AP Reports. The trial lasted two weeks and had a total of eight jurors.

Thicke and Williams, who racked up $5 million each from the hit single, releases a joint statement in regards to the verdict:

“While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward,” Williams, Thicke and T.I. said in a joint statement. “‘Blurred Lines’ was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else.  We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.”

Speaking after the trial Nona Gaye, daughter of Marvin, stated, “I feel free. Free from, honestly free, from Pharrell’s and Robin Thicke’s chains that they tried to keep on us.”

Howard King, Attorney for Thicke and Williams, expressed disappointment on behalf of his clients before stating, “we know in our hearts that ‘Blurred Lines’ is an independent creation from the heart and soul of Pharrell Williams and no one else.”
