What should have been A$AP Rocky’s celebration was cut short at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The Harlem rapper was at the perennial festival to make his acting debut in a film called Dope, where he has a supporting role as a drug dealer in Inglewood, CA. While hitting the stage for a short two-song set, Rocky took time to dedicate the final song to the late A$AP Yams, a close friend and the mastermind behind the A$AP movement that passed away a week ago.

Rocky then spoke to Billboard and opened up about Yams’ death.

That performance –that was just going to stop me from crying,” Rocky said. “I had to address it, because the whole time I was rapping and I wasn’t into it, which is sad, but I just gotta keep it real. I can’t front. It’s even harder knowing that I gotta fly out in less than an hour just to go bury him. That’s the part that eats at me.”

The true cause for Yams’ death at the young age of 26 is still unknown, and Rocky kept it that way. But he did make sure to further deny rumors that he died from a drug overdose.

“People were saying that Yams overdosed on drugs –he didn’t overdose on any drugs,” Rocky said.  “I feel like people feel that way because that’s all he’s in pictures doing. When you see A$AP Yams you see Hennessey or purple drink, you see some type of controlled substance or illegal narcotic.”

The good news is that A$AP Rocky is in relatively good spirits, given his current circumstances. He admits that the timing of this tragedy couldn’t have been much worse for him, though. His acting debut just occurred and he’s set to play a role in Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.

“I’m a happy spirit man, and I feel like time heals,” he said. “It’s all about good people with good energy, and the universe keeps producing them to me. I’ll be fine. God is good and I keep all hope and faith.”
