There is a need for reform across the nation in regards to police brutality. Following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered his 2015 Opportunity Agenda in Albany, NY yesterday (Jan. 21). According to the Albany Times Union, Jay Z fully supports Cuomo’s police reform package.

“The criminal justice reform package proposed by Governor Cuomo today is a huge step forward in restoring fairness, protection, sensitivity and accountability for all under our justice system,” Jay allegedly said. “I commend Governor Cuomo for his bold leadership in taking this issue head on at this critical time. This package presents comprehensive steps to protect and improve relations amongst all citizens. We cannot be divided, as every single human being matters. Together, we can move forward as a community, with mutual respect for each other and continue to make this great state stronger than ever before.”

This isn’t the first time Jigga showed his support for the governor’s efforts. Last month (Dec. 10), the rapper sat down with the Cuomo privately to discuss criminal justice reform. Following their chat, Cuomo’s camp released a statement:

Governor Cuomo has said he wants a comprehensive review of the current criminal justice system and has been talking with interested parties to discuss just that. Over the last week, he has personally spoken with members of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, PBA President Pat Lynch, community activists including Russell Simmons and Shawn ‘Jay Z’ Carter, and district attorneys from across the state and looks forward to continuing this dialogue with additional stakeholders in the coming days and weeks.

Alongside Jay Z, Russell Simmons also made his support of Cuomo’s agenda known via Twitter. “I know @NYGovCuomo has always been a champion for criminal justice reform. His new proposal is great progress towards a more just society,” he tweeted.
