When will it end? It feels like every other day, we’re reporting on another death of another teenage kid from another police officer. In the late hours of Tuesday night (December 23), 18-year old Antonio Martin was fatally shot by St. Louis police at a Mobil gas station in Berkley, Missouri after allegedly pointing a gun of his own at the officer who shot him. This took place just 2 miles away from Ferguson, where we all know chaos has been taking place.

Here’s more details from the AP regarding the situation:

County police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schellman says a Berkeley police officer was conducting a routine business check at a gas station around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday when he saw two men and approached them. Schellman says one of the men pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The officer fired several shots, striking and fatally wounding the man. Schellman says that the second person fled and that the deceased man’s handgun has been recovered.

It should be made clear that the shooting officer “forgot” to turn on his newly enforced body cams, and the dash cam of his vehicle was also conveniently turned off. I’m not making any suggestions of the officer lying, but what was the point of enforcing the body cams if there’s no reprimand for forgetting to wear it?

Nonetheless, what really matters today is the world lost another teenage boy to the hands of police shooting. Regardless of who was right or wrong, we just lost another child. That can’t and shouldn’t be ok anymore.

Rest In Peace Antonio Martin and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
