Hip-hop met politics yesterday (Dec. 10), when rap’s highest elect Jay Z met with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The meeting of minds wasn’t to talk about Jay’s latest encounter with the visiting Royals, instead the two met to discuss criminal justice reform in their beloved state.

Hov and Cuomo discussed potential changes to law including the appointment of a special prosecutor following the fatal chokehold of Eric Garner by an NYPD officer, according to the Daily Kos.

Chopping it up at Cuomo’s Manhattan office, the governor’s spokesperson Melissa DeRosa coined the meeting as a productive one. “[The two] had a productive conversation about doing a top-to-bottom review of the criminal-justice system, and how we can all work together to pass a reform package that ensures equality in the eyes of the law,” DeRosa said according to the NY Post’s Page Six column.

The call for a special, outside prosecutor to investigate crimes involving police brutality has been suggested by various spokespersons following the unfortunate deaths of both 18-year-old Michael Brown and Staten Island native Eric Garner.
