The era of slavery is a prevalent time in America’s history. In an episode of PBS’ Finding Your Roots, Nas sits down with Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. where he encounters documents of his ancestor’s history. In the clip above, the Queens MC stares at a receiptĀ from slave owner, Benjamin Franklin Little, who purchased his great, great, great grandmother Pocahantas Little for a little under $900.

“Wow, I have more than that in my pocket right now,” Nas said.

Looking at the picture of the slave owner, he is visibly upset and explains his emotions at staring at the man who enslaved his ancestors. Though the plantation has since been burned down, Nasir Jones takes a moment to tell Professor Gates that he is thinking of purchasing that land.

Watch the emotional clip above.

I had to know and for anyone else thinking of googling it $830 in 1857 would be $20.5K in 2014 dollars.
