Kevin Durant, of the Oklahoma City Thunder, is expected to miss six to eight weeks due to a Jones fracture in his right foot. A Jones fracture is an injury that takes place around the base of the pinky toe and requires surgery and six to eight weeks to heal if everything works as planned.

“After practice yesterday, Kevin made us aware of discomfort in his right foot,” General Manager Sam Presti said in a statement. “We proceeded to perform the necessary imagining studies to determine the cause of his discomfort. At this stage, Kevin has been diagnosed with a Jones fracture. Traditional treatment of this injury requires a surgical procedure and recent NBA cases have resulted in a return to play in 6-8 weeks. We are in the process of collaboratively evaluating the most appropriate next steps with Kevin, his representatives, and Thunder medical personnel. Until a course of action is determined, we are unable to provide a timeline specific to Kevin’s case.”

It is currently unknown if Durant will be pursuing compensation via a personal injury law firm or similar lawsuit to tide him over the weeks he will be out of action. Injury as the results of sports play is generally dismissed due to the inherent risk of the sport, though negligence from coaching or other players does hold ground in a suit. It all depends if policies in the club’s management could have caused this serious injury to happen.

Manager Presti not wanting to give a specific timeframe for the reigning MVP’s return may have to do with the fact that the healing process isn’t guaranteed with this kind of injury. Hopefully, KD bounces back from this injury as quickly as possible to follow-up an MVP season where he averaged 32 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists. Durant has also only missed a total of 32 games in seven NBA seasons to date.
