Civil Scope: QuESt

What was your childhood like?

QuESt: I grew up in Miami Fl. North Miami Beach to be exact. My childhood was pretty decent. My mother raised me as an only child in a one bedroom apartment, and my father would come see me on the weekends. We didn’t have everything in the world, but I always had a roof over my head and never missed a meal. I was going to a school outside of my district, so all my friends were outside the city. When I came home, I just stayed inside most of the time. I think that’s how I became introspective & started writing music.

How did you come up with the name “QuESt” and is there a specific reason why the “E” and the “S” are capitalized?

QuESt: I started out as Lil Q, then Q, then my name changed to Question, which became a reoccurring joke. Then one of my homies yelled out QuESt! It just stuck with me ever since. I capitalized the ES because it was a pretty common name and I needed something to stand out. NaS was my favorite rapper at the time, so I decided to capitalize the ES like he did his S.

You tell a lot of stories on your latest project Searching Sylvan and you’re very honest about your struggles throughout the album. Is it hard to relive those hardships when making music?

QuESt: Its tough to capture the moment after it’s gone. As time passed on, a lot of the stories I was trying to pen didn’t apply to my life at the current moment. I had to revisit places that I’d been trying to bury for months. In a way, composing this album helped me confront things head on instead of running away from them in fear.
