Ray Rice Contract Terminated

The Baltimore Ravens have terminated Ray Rice’s contract following the release of a video of him violently striking his then fiancée, Janay Palmer. At the time of the incident, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell administered a two-game suspension to serve as punishment as well as a fine. Goodell claims that he and his office had not seen the footage until earlier today.

“We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator,”Greg Aiello, NFL senior vice president of communications, said. “That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today.”

In July, Rice told a press conference that his actions were “inexcusable.” He also revealed that he and his wife were seeking counseling. “We’re taking the necessary steps to move forward,” he said. “My job is to lead my family. My job is to lead my wife. My job is to lead in whatever I do. And If I’m not being the example, then my family crumbles.”

Following the hefty load of criticism, Goodell admits that the situation was handled poorly.“I didn’t get it right. Simply put, we have to do better. And we will,” he said.

ABC News also just tweeted that Rice will be suspended indefinitely after the video footage that was released today:

In his August letter to team owners, Goodell explains that any future domestic violence incidents will result in heftier punishments. The first incident results in a six-game unpaid suspension; a second leads to a lifetime ban from the league.

Do you agree with the Baltimore Ravens’ decision?
