The Tupac-inspired Broadway Holler If Ya Hear Me will be shutting its doors sooner than expected. Due to the financial burdens of Broadway, poor critical reviews and an inability to pack out the theater, the non-biographical production will be taking its final bow next weekend according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“My hope is that a production of this caliber, powerful in its story telling, filled with great performances and exciting contemporary dance and music, will eventually receive the recognition it deserves,” Eric L. Gold said in a statement. “It saddens me that due to the financial burdens of Broadway, I was unable to sustain this production longer in order to give it time to bloom on Broadway. Tupac’s urgent socially important insights and the audiences’ nightly rousing standing ovations deserve to be experienced by the world.”

The play officially opened its doors June 19 and had since been struggling to fill the downsized orchestra section of the Palace Theatre. Regularly, Broadway plays reign in numbers like $1 million a week but Holler’s $8 million production never saw $200,000 during its six week tenure.

The musical will have only played 17 previews and 38 regular performances by the time it ends. No plans for a tour or subsequent regional productions have yet been discussed.
