It’s being reported that Lifetime’s upcoming Aaliyah biopic will touch on the singer’s controversial relationship with R. Kelly, according to Page Six. For a time it was thought that R. Kelly was a mentor to the singer but it was revealed in 1994 that the two may have illegally filed for a marriage license when she was 15 years old and R. Kelly was 27. The marriage was reportedly annulled by Aaliyah’s family immediately but the two singers always denied the attempt.

The film is set to focus on Aaliyah’s life from the age of 10 to when she passed at 22 in a 2001 plane crash. The news of focusing on R. Kelly’s relationship with Aaliyah adds a little more controversy to a film that seems to already be surrounded by it after announcing the casting of Zendaya Coleman to play Aaliyah and the news that the family will do all they can to block the production of the film.
