The Electric Lady can add hero to her ever growing resumé. For Pepsi’s new “Now Is What You Make It” campaign, the company has commissioned Janelle Monáe to record a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” Ms. Monáe brought the 1977 rock song an electric makeover but maintained the integrity of what is one of her favorite songs.

“Bowie is part of my musical DNA in so many ways,” she told Rolling Stone. “And ‘Heroes’ is one of my favorite Bowie songs. When you love your favorite song, you want to keep some of the beautiful qualities of the original, but we brought Atlanta in the drums and wanted them to be thick and hit hard.”
