Being-Mary-Jane-Recap-Karen-CivilThat one week hiatus was well worth all the shade thrown in last night’s (February 4) episode of Being Mary Jane. Before the mudslinging began, a serious serving of comedic relief came in the form of Avery’s (Robinne Lee) desperate act of giving her husband all the cognitive activity he claimed he desired. Unfortunately, it appeared that her apparent disinterest was not enough to satisfy. Her pillow hugging nearly resulted in an accident that would’ve made for a hilarious story in the ER:”You’re going to pull it out the socket.” Surprise fellatio certainly isn’t a moment where her comfort is a priority.

After #LazyHead started trending, we saw Mary Jane (Gabrielle Union) make the mistake many of us have made with the trademark line: “You can tell me anything.” As usual, the harsh reality is we are not as strong as we presume ourselves to be to hear about the dealings with or concerning the other woman. In Mary Jane’s head their perfect little world is equipped with no wife or secret family, just their flawed relationship. What is shocking is that Andre (Omari Hardwick) really believes that he has grounds to stop Mary Jane from dating – how warped is this man?

While the writers make Andre a man any woman easily wants to hate, this episode finally made him human. We’ve seen him as the cheating husband, a liar, someone who has all the cake and is eating it too but there is a deep rooted issue in his marriage that we were blinded to see. The couple’s therapy session provided context to his cheating as much as we dislike his stepping out. Finally, it is no longer the poor excuse of “bad sex.” In a previous episode, Avery shouted that she made her husband who he is today. Her investment has become desirable to other women and instead of seeing him as her husband she continued to view him as a science project. He became all that she wanted and his dissatisfaction with their relationship stems from the constant reminder that he used to be nothing and with her he became something. Our significant other’s shouldn’t be lab rats we hope to win Nobel Prizes for.

The real highlight of the entire hour was Mary Jane and Avery’s politically correct verbal battle at what was supposed to be a gala to uplift women – not effortlessly tear them down with words. As much as we hated Avery for bringing up her affair to obviously spark discomfort in Mary Jane, we can’t deny that not one of us would have done the same. That scene exemplified the stereotype that women are indeed catty. The very foul but very true moral that erupted from her freestyle speech: what number one won’t do, number two certainly will.

Just when we thought Mary Jane may be on her way to proactively dating and ridding herself of her Andre addiction, of course he swoops in after a fabulous date and announces that he has filed for divorce. So much for the very real statistic that married men are less likely to leave their wives for their mistresses. With the finale looming ahead, let’s see if Andre is sticking to his guns or shooting blanks.
