Hip hop may be heated by Macklemore’s Grammy sweep but Kendrick Lamar is taking it all in stride. XXL caught up with the TDE rapper after his surprise appearances at both J. Cole’s and Dom Kennedy’s shows last night (January 28).

“It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man,” Kendrick said to XXL. “He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go.”

Following India Arie’s comments on the lack of Black artists represented in the Grammys, K Dot eloquently stated his thoughts on the Grammy’s value of hip-hop.

“I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre,” Kendrick said. “We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.”

That was actually eloquently put. Loved how he answered that. Us as outsiders are trying to stick up for Kendrick but Macklemore really did grind like everyone else did. What made him take home the Grammy was that he caters to two different worlds making him have vast appeal. Kendrick yes is hip hop but hip hop has changed and other colors have been accepted now into what we as African Americans have built. It’s a new era, so when other races come in they can cater to their market, our (blacks) market and other markets which means that you’ll have more air play on other stations, more brand sponsorships, more YouTube views which in turn makes you win the Grammy. There’s politics to this music industry that everyone who isn’t in it must understand. Kendrick will have his turn, he showcased that by his performance that he can do DOPE performances with other artist, he showed his skills, by next year, he’ll get his Grammy.
