Being-Mary-Jane-Karen-CivilIf every first 10 minutes of Being Mary Jane is going to be bizarrely intense, an Olivia Pope sized glass of wine is needed within hand reach. Fresh off their rendezvous in the steamy gym shower, Mary Jane (Gabrielle Union) visits her married beau to find that she has walked into a proposal in their nostalgic weekend getaway apartment. Is this guy serious? The chances of a married man leaving their married lives for the fantasy life lived in their affair is unlikely. But Andre (Omari Hardwick) was prepared with a nice size rock and even more half-promises.

As if being walked out on wasn’t enough, Andre was met with a post-nup. Emotionally fed up, Avery (Robinne Lee) drummed up paper work to make sure that if he chooses to wander again she will be taken care of. Two houses, full custody and 75% worth of alimony is certainly enough to repay the damage to a woman after being cheated on. It wasn’t surprising that he didn’t sign or initial at the marked pages, it was surprising that he didn’t offer any assurances that he would be a faithful husband from here on out. Judging from the look on his face and his mailing Mary Jane her engagement ring, it looks like this man wants to continue his double life.

There is nothing like a good girl’s night out. Once the wine is on pour and the cops raided the girl’s gone wild night, dirty little secrets pour out like leaky fossets. Luckily Mary Jane isn’t the only one dipping into the controversial affair realm – though she leaves her homegirl out to dry. Friend Michelle (Brely Evans) makes her relationship with a married man seem glamorous. Her expensive purses, lavish trips and clutter free apartment seem like great excuses to jump into an affair. But behind it all there is still that shred of loneliness and want to be wanted as more than just a weekend lover. Excuses make it easier to sleep at night. Before ending the night without sharing some of her own truth, the fated frozen sperm from ex-boyfriend David (Stephen Bishop) ends up being quite the act of desperation in friend Lisa’s (Latarsha Rose) eyes. Thankfully, she froze it wrong.

Drunk texting to end her night, despite her engagement ring Andre proves that even that nice sized rock is another half promise. Spending a passionate night with his wife to attempt to show he is willing to re-commit while Mary Jane sleeps in her empty bed only proves that an affair leaves the side-chick, no matter how much he claims he loves her, alone at night. Sidechicks are not winning.

With all the marital bliss, sacrifice and upset, what exactly are we learning about relationships in Being Mary Jane? Is the fate of modern married life the acceptance that men will cheat if we aren’t taking care of house?
