Today (Nov. 14) commemorates the 10-year anniversary of Jay Z’s faux-retirement LP, The Black Album. Back in 2003, Hov led fans and critics to truly believe this arguably flawless body of work was going to be Hov’s last hoorah in music ever. His relationship with then girlfriend (now wife!) Beyoncé was seriously heating up and was appointed president and CEO of Def Jam Records and was screaming that he’d “done it all,” so his post-retirement plans seemed solid. (Luckily for us, he did return to the booth.)

For one of the most influential albums the game’s ever seen, Jay enlisted the dream team of production–Kanye West, Just Blaze, Rick Rubin, Eminem, Timbaland and the Neptunes. Chart-topping singles, such as “99 Problems,” “Change Clothes,” “Encore,” and “What More Can I Say,” rounded out a classic tracklist.

For many people, including myself, The Black Album was the first album they ever purchased, the first concert they ever went to and these 14 tracks even changed lives. Naturally, rappers used this as a blueprint (no pun intended) for their own hits. Peep this list of 10 songs influenced by lyrics from The Black Album. –Shanae Hatchett
