In Miley Cyrus’ latest cover interview with Rolling Stone, she divulged Sinead O’Connor as one of her biggest influences. In fact, much of Cyrus’ viral “Wrecking Ball” video was inspired by the Irish singer’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” as seen by the extreme, naked close-ups.

While O’Connor may have been flattered, she expressed concern for Miley’s path in the music industry and gave her some unsolicited advice for being a woman and having respect for yourself in the business. “I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos,” O’Connor wrote, in an open letter to the pop star. “It is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.”

Though the advice may seem harsh, the blunt words were balanced by praise O’Connor gave for Cyrus’ apparent talent. But her praise also came with a warning: “The music business doesn’t give a shit about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted.”

The “We Can’t Stop” artist didn’t see much value in O’Connor’s words. She took to her Twitter Thursday (Oct. 3) to post a screenshot of O’Connor’s Twitter page. With the flick, she wrote, “Before Amanda Bynes….There was…,” a comment Sinead didn’t take kindly to.

“Remove the tweets immediately,” O’Connor responded in a new letter posted Friday. “It is most unbecoming of you to respond in such a fashion to someone who expressed care for you.”
Following in O’Connor’s footsteps, Miley will appear on SNL on Saturday (Oct. 5). Let’s see if Miley makes anymore references to the singer then. – Alley Olivier
