Legendary west coast rapper and producer DJ Quik sat down with Jay Z’s Life+Times for an episode of Decoded: “Justify My Thug”, a track off of what was supposed to be Jay’s retirement project, The Black Album.

In the interview, Quik discusses Hov’s one-of-a-kind artistry when it comes to the creative process of making tracks.

“Jigga can pretty much can rap to anything because he’s a learned MC. Like, it almost comes a little bit too easy for him. All the things I liked about him I wanted to bring out through my production. ”

Quik goes deeper to talk  about how Pop Icon Madonna was supposed to come in and sing the hook for the track, but backed out at the last minute, yet they still found a way to make magic. After watching Hov at work, the Compton-born producer realized just how unique and great his creative process is and how rare it is to see it happen.

“He comes from a political place. Why is my hood like this, why does our president do this stuff, why is nobody saying the things that we are all thinking but nobody has the gall to mention. He sat for a minute. …Stood up and said outta nowhere ‘I got it.’ It was awesome.”
