Last night 13 people, including a 3-year-old boy, were victims of a shooting at a park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago during a basketball game..

The Chicago Tribune reports that the police believe the shooting is due to a dispute between rival gangs the Black P. Stones and Gangster Disciples and was unsure if any of the victims were intended targets.

Chicago police state at least one gunman walked up to basketball courts of the park and opened fire around 10:15 p.m at the pick up game’s participants and their spectators. As paramedics arrived they found the people lying on the court after the shooting.

The injured 3-year-old Deonta Howard, who was standing on the court of Cornell Square Park watching the other victims play, was shot near the ear where the bullet exited through his cheek. Howard is expected to recover but will be in need of plastic surgery.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy stated the shooting as a “miracle” as no one who had been fired at had died. McCarthy has reissued his call for a ban on assault weapons by stating “A military-grade weapon on the streets of Chicago is simply unacceptable”.

3 year old Deonta Howard is out of surgery and in stable condition. All of the other victims of the shooting are still alive as well. Read the full story here.
