“I am the Electric Lady, and I am your morning coffee,” Janelle Monáe announced just before launching into “Dance Apocalyptic” at NYC’s Rockefeller Center on Thursday (Sept. 12) for The Today Show concert series.

The brown-skinned chanteuse brought her captivating allure as fans guzzled her high-energy performance.

During a post-performance interview, she spoke about the variety of her latest album, in stores now, The Electric Lady. 

“I wanted to focus on creating a new breed,” she says, “a new 21st-century woman someone who is not defined by her skin color or hair texture but by what she does for the community, how she goes into the community and nurtures the next generation.”
