This past week was a momentous one for rap stars Big Sean and Juicy J.

Sean’s Aside from their relentless promo runs, the two artists took over August 27 to release their new albums, Hall of Fame and Stay Trippy, respectively. And after their first week on shelves, both LPs scored a Top 5 debut, with Sean capturing the No. 3 spot with 72k units sold and Juicy not far behind at No. 4 with 64k.

Sean’s HOF falls in the same position as his 2011 debut Finally Famous, which also opened at No. 3 with 87k in sales (according to SoundScan). Despite falling behind the G.O.O.D. Music rapper’s sophomore release, Academy Award-winning rapper Juicy J (of Three 6 Mafia) is still having the best week ever. His Stay Trippy LP landed him at the highest position he’s ever hit on the Billboard charts. By contrast, his independent 2002 solo debut, Chronicles of the Juice Man only climbed to No. 93 on the Billboard 200 chart.

So with Sean and Juicy in the top 5, who’s topping this week’s album charts? As expected, rock band Avenged Sevenfold takes over the top spot with its new Hail to the King LP, which sold over 165k this past week.

Meanwhile, last week’s chart-topper Luke Bryan falls to No. 2 with 96k, while Robin Thicke rounds out the Top 5 with his Blurred Lines album (57k).  Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience remains strong on the charts, sitting at No. 6. The sales bump can be attributed to the superstar’s stellar performance and multiple wins at the MTV Video Music Awards.

JT’s 20/20 album still stands as the highest selling album of 2013 with a whopping 2 million units sold.

That elephant in the room that is Big Sean’s sales numbers. None of the blogs seem to want to touch that topic. To date, his first album has only sold 300K units. Let’s see how much longer the hype machine can go.
