Come May 24, Common’s Be turns seven years old. Let that marinate.

Given the way Lonnie’s career has progressed in the past handful of years, it’s often easier to forget how important the album was. It was Com’s debut album under Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint and the result was probably one of the more important pieces of the 2000’s. Be represented a comeback album of sorts for Com as the soulful LP was filled to the brim with production from Kanye, which at that time may have been the most in demand in urban music.

“Faithful” remains a standout track and one serving as as an example of “when the planets were in alignment.” A perfect beat, a flawless instrumental, a hook powerful enough to move the soul and verses that were defined by both lyricism and beauty resulted in what, in many ways, is still an example of a perfect song.

You know how our parents have grown old with certain songs? I could see myself playing this well into my 70’s. God willing, of course.
