Slated to premier June 15, 2012, this will be the first of its kind for Disney.  Clearly, they’re making incentive to continue on their quest of reaching to a larger audience, which I’d say began with their first Black Princess in “The Princess and the Frog.

“Let It Shine” is a movie inspired by hip-hop, rap, and gospel.  From the critically acclaimed show “Everybody Hates Chris,” Tyler James Williams takes the lead again as the main man in action.  But the ensemble cast includes a list of other talents from CoCo Jones, Trevor Jackson, and Brandon Mychal Smith.  Directed by Paul Hoen, the first sneak peek was revealed with great anticipation.

Check the synopsis below followed by the official trailer.  It seems to be a pretty good story and portrayal of Black youth and the hip hop community. Is this something you will be supporting with your young children/family?

The story follows 16-year-old Cyrus DeBarge (Williams), an aspiring musician who has a gift for rhyme yet lacks the self-confidence to take the stage and, through his rap song, tell his longtime crush Roxanne Andrews (Jones) how he feels about her.

After he and his flighty best friend, Kris McDuffy (Trevor Jackson) enter a songwriting contest, Kris is mistakenly named the winner for a song Cyrus wrote. Fearful of being thrust into the spotlight, Cyrus panics and allows Kris to take credit for his heartfelt lyrics and soon he’s standing by as Roxanne begins to fall for Kris.

It’s good that Disney is trying to be more culturally diverse. They have totally missed the mark of trying to represent the Hip Hop community. The movie is too watered down and unrealistic. The wardrobe director definitely missed his mark. Disney should stick to cartoons and unrealistic TV shows/movies that don’t totally misrepresent the Hip Hop and Black community.
