Dom Kennedy has been a synonymous with West Coast hip hop for years now. His trademark, recliner flow is earning him stripes as not only an “up and coming” artist to keep watch over, but one of the premiere game spitters currently in the game. Dom talks about issues only pertinent to his life and they are as wide as they are quirky. Carving out a few minutes from his schedule, the rapper graciously accepted the request for us to chop it up with us live from his Los Angeles office.

D.K. opens up as to when and if we can ever expect a third addition to the From The Westside With Love series, a song of his he really wanted to shoot a video for and how the 15th anniversary of 2Pac’s passing literally came out of nowhere. For the sports heads out there, there’s something for you as well. He also opens up about the possibility of L.A. landing a NFL team and why he thinks Dwight Howard will eventually become a Los Angeles Laker.

Has focused shifted to what your next project is going to be? Possibly a From The Westside With Love 3?

Oh, nah. Nah. It ain’t gon be no From The Westside With Love 3. At least, not no time soon it isn’t. You know, I’m just enjoying life right now, focusing on these shows, doing a couple of videos. I think the next thing I put out I’m just not going to tell anybody, for real. All I’m trying to do is change the world of music and what’s going on. So yeah, the next time I do drop something, I’m just not gon’ tell anybody.
One of your standout songs this year has been “When You See Love” from The Original Dom Kennedy. Have you ever thought of shooting a video for that or possibly “Platinum Chanel” off From The Westside With Love 2?

Definitely! Man, I wanted to. I really wanted to. We’re actually working on something for “Platinum Chanel” right now. I really wanted to do “When You See Love,” but after I put that out I was working on From The Westside With Love 2. You know from there I just had less time to work those songs like I really wanted to or I could have, so I just had to move on to recording FTWSWL2.

But yeah, that “Platinum Chanel” video should be out pretty soon.

With this year being the 15th anniversary of Pac’s death and the Makaveli album…

Damn!! It’s been 15 years?!

Yep. He was killed in ’96.

I used to steal those albums from Sam Goodie back in the day. On “Locals Only,” I’ve got a line like “I used to rob stores for a tape I could afford/I wanna thank the Lord for the life of Tupac Shakur.” I was like in the eighth grade.

Did you ever get all of the Makaveli tapes?

The cassette tapes? Oh nah, nah. I used to hear people playing them all the time, but I never really hopped into the shit after his death.

There’s talk of LA getting a football team. What’s your take on that?

I like football. I can’t really say I have a team because I haven’t had one in so long. I just watch it more so as a fan and I used to be a Cowboys fan growing up. I like the Raiders too because they played in LA. My loyalty isn’t with one team though.

We know you’re a big Lakers fan. How confident in you are about them pending there’s a season?

Now I definitely think that’s going to be interesting. I’m confident they can make it back to where they were. I don’t know, man. As far as the championship, I didn’t even expect them to lose last year. That was kind of a shock to everybody. I definitely they’re going to have to make some moves. They’re not going to finish with the roster they’re going to start with.

I definitely see them packaging some players to get Dwight Howard. Based on the history of the Lakers always having a center, it’s inevitable. First and foremost, they gon’ always have the money to spend, especially on the star players. I mean, if Miami can afford Wade and LeBron, LA can definitely afford Kobe and Dwight Howard. I think they’re going to make that happen.
