Billboard Breakdown: The Lady Gaga Edition

Coming into this Wednesday, I had planned to do the “Billboard Breakdown” by using the same formula I always have. That was until news broke last night (at least that’s when I saw it) that the ever-controversial, yet insanely popular Lady Gaga once again put herself in rarefied air by selling over a million copies in a week. How rare is it you ask? Only 16 albums before Born This Way have ever hit seven digits in its first week on shelves.

When an artist does something like that, whatever everybody else sold is pretty much irrelevant, at least for a week. It signals a different level of celebrity, both national and worldwide.  I’ve never really sat down and listened to Gaga for more than 10 minutes, but I’ve never been one to knock the hustle. The question I have is will an album ever eclipse the diamond plateau again. If I was a betting man, and I do dabble in wagers from time to time, she would be the artist I’d bet on. Even before Beyonce. Speaking of Mrs. Knowles-Carter, her sales, in light of Gaga’s, will be mighty interesting. Especially if she can receive the same type of love from Amazon that L.G. did.

For what it’s worth though, Self Made Vol. 1 did slightly less than Lady G by clocking in at 59,000. Have at that how you will.

I don’t know, I mean yeah she sold a milli and I’m giving her props, but how many of those albums were full priced like the 16 other individuals? Just doesn’t seem to count to me…
