Odd Future And Their Record Label Situation

Throughout 2011, Odd Future have arguably been the most talked about names in the music industry. Their presence in the on the scene has had them around for awhile, but from the moment Wiz Khalifa announced his new album would be called Rolling Papers, things appeared to change (at least, for the masses). Tyler, The Creator became a permanent fixture for his music and unique personality. Earl Sweatshirt has tons of people singing his praises and Frank Ocean became one of the most talked about R&B artists seemingly overnight. Everyone from Diddy to Pharrell has been seen on stage with the ensemble and word around the industry has had labels all but begging for their services.

Turns out we may have our answer sooner than later. Their manager Chris Clancy released this statement.

“It’s based on getting the distribution deal we’ve always envisioned that allows the group to “sign  themselves” to their own company and keep their masters. They will have 100% creative control of all aspects of their music, art, and release schedule with no 3rd party participation in outside business. Freedom and ownership was the whole point. Red and Sony know that its in everyone’s best interest to maintain the group’s authenticity and control. They built it, they deserve it. There’s no cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works..  It’s about to be fun.. and different.. “

  1. hymn says:

That just seems like the right move for them, matter of fact for any independent artist that has a big buzz.
