In a roundabout way, DJ Kool Herc is responsible for the words you’re reading on this site and every other outlet dedicated to covering Hip-Hop. You see, Herc has long been considered one of the creators of this genre and he did so way before many of us were even born, myself included. Admittedly, I do not know as much about his legacy as others do, but allow this paragraph to seep in to gauge his true impact.

Herc, born Clive Campbell, came to prominence in the late 70’s DJ’ing parties throughout the South Bronx. Herc’s deep crates and eclectic mix of records (Funk, Latin, Jazz, etc.) are credited for sparking what we know as Hip-Hop today. Taking two of the same record, Herc would isolate and extend popular segments of recordings, which became known as “breaks.” A party he threw for his sister Cindy Campbell on August 11, 1973 at 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx is credited as the day Hip-Hop was born.

Yeah, he BIRTHED an entire genre. Or so the legend goes. You would think a man with such a groundbreaking innovation would reap the monetary benefits of such an accomplishment. Unfortunately, it is quite the opposite.

Over the weekend, DJ Premier let loose of the news of the legend’s illness and financial setbacks on his Live From HeadQcourterz SIRIUS satellite radio show. Kool Herc finds himself battling an unspecified illness at the moment and word is funds are being accepted to cover whatever medical expenses will arise. He is without health insurance. Here’s to hoping and praying this money not only pays his expenses, but more importantly Herc beats whatever he is facing at the moment. Many people, mostly elderly people, struggle with paying for long term health care services, so they rely on insurance or lenders such as Medicaid. However, many people can’t help but ask the question of how to protect money from medicaid and how it help you in the long run. Similar to paying medical bills without insurance, it’s a risk. Whilst he could look into taking out a loan to cover his medical expenses, he would need to have his credit history and score checked by somewhere like Credit Karma – you can find more information in this detailed Credit Karma review. As a result, many people are keen to donate to help Herc. Those interested in donating can do so here:
