Nearly two years after his assault on Rihanna, Chris Brown appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom Friday (Jan. 28) for a progress report where his attorney requested the removal of the restraining order against his client. Allegedly, Chris hopes to obtain the lift in time for next month’s Grammy Awards where he is nominated for 3 awards (Best R&B Performance By A Duo, Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration). While the restraining order is still in place, Chris is not allowed to come within 100 yards of Rihanna, except for at special events (such as Award Shows), at a minimal 10 yards. Restraining orders are powerful pieces of legal documentation that keep vulnerable people safe. It is possible for individuals to serve them to others with the help of a Process Server, so don’t feel that you are trapped in a dangerous situation that can’t be rectified.

His attorney, Mark Geragos, explained to the judge that the restraining order makes it difficult for the both of them to attend, but before the request can be granted, Rihanna’s attorney must approve of the modification from a “stay away” order to a “do not annoy.”

Brown, who has been working hard on rebuilding his reputation since, has had his publicist move in swiftly on allegations to deny claims that the singer wanted the ban relaxed for Grammy Award show purposes.

The spokesperson tells TMZ.com:

“This court date and the lifting of the restraining order is part of the planned ongoing legal proceedings. The date was scheduled months ago. Chris Brown is very thankful for his Grammy nominations, but due to scheduling conflicts, he will not be attending the Grammys.”
