LimeWire Shuts Down Due To NY Court Order

Call it the end of an era. For as frowned upon as pirating music has been since the turn of the century, damn near everyone has done it at some point. And chances are each person has used the peer-to-peer OG program Limewire at some point as well. Well, all things must come to an end and Limewire’s time is now. A judge has issued an order to shut the software down for its service being used “overwhelmingly for infringment.”

The LimeWire site shut down its service Wednesday, displaying only a legal notice announcing that that company “is under a court-ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software.”

Nonetheless, the company insisted that it has not been permanently put out of business.

“While this is not our ideal path, we hope to work with the music industry in moving forward,” LimeWire said in a prepared statement. “We look forward to embracing necessary changes and collaborating with the entire music industry in the future.”

The CEO George Searle posted a message on the company’s site saying only Limewire is down, but rather the company is still open for business. While LW remains behind judicial bars, Gnutella and BitTorrent (the networks the software used) are still alive and well. Those looking for an alternative file-sharing platform might want to consider a FrostWire 32 bit download instead while we wait to see if Limewire will ever make a return.
