Kanye Says Taylor Swift, Ray Charles & Others Didn’t Deserve Awards

Kanye West and award shows have never seen eye to eye. A year after his last debacle at one, Kanye sounds off on those who he those who felt were undeserving of the honors.

“Where’s our instant replay clock?” West asked, according to Access Hollywood. “Why are the last four Albums of the Year: Taylor Swift, Dixie Chicks, Ray Charles and Herbie Hancock? Like, you know, with all due respect… that’s inaccurate.” (Speaking of inaccuracies, he forgot to mention Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, who won in 2009. Maybe he’s a fan.)

Instead, West suggested a few albums he’d rather have seen win. “It’s like ‘SexyBack’ — you know what I’m saying? Like [Justin Timberlake’s] FutureSex/LoveSounds, Gnarls Barkley. How about Usher — Confessions? How about albums that sold 10 million?”

Lest you misunderstand the motivations behind these words, West clarified the larger social significance involved: “I pinpoint the Grammys and the VMAs because they have to take responsibility, because they mean something to us. Little kids, 6 years [old], that are singing in front of the mirror. They’re also thinking about their Grammy speech; they’re thinking about when there will be a VMA so these people, whoever run them… they have to take some responsibility to say what really happened in culture this year because we’re marking it down.”

    might sound horrible but hes right. the grammys always take the safe route and pick the veterans for album of the year. its hardly ever the people’s choice

  2. I get where he’s coming from. Same argument that’s made about the Oscars. How are you going to award these albums, good though they may be, that ultimately don’t have the impact or influence upon the industry or pop culture that the other nominees have? It’s indicative of the elitism of the voting body. *kanyeshrug*

  3. that is a very astute comment and he’ll take alot of flack for making it.
    the truth always gets the messenger killed – even when the people
    adopt the message. the record industry killed itself, and artists like
    Kanye are talking about it. Nas spoke out about Def Jam jacking his
    joint and we think it’s high time that the industry took it’s part at the
    table of shame, for their intentional dumbing down of the fans and
    the industry in general.

    Hallelujah and God Bless U Ye for telling the truth;

    Even if it is the truth. No one wants to hear it from Kanye. His crazy completely negates the validity of his point.

    We know that what he’s saying is true. Even when he did the whole Taylor Swift “scandal”, my mom & was like WTF? Before I could turn my head he was all on stage acting out. Majority (if not all) the statements & sentiments he chooses to speak out on is usually what we at home feel & think about as well. However he can stand to leave some discussion for the coffee table & the water cooler if U know what I mean. It’s funny because Tupac was the same way with his statements. We seen how that went for him. Creative minds suffer at the hands of themselves.
