Catalog Catch Up: Max B – “Never Wanna Go Back”

Last I heard, Max was still slated to do 75 years. Stories of appeals come and go, but I never heard anything official. So as of this moment, I don’t expect to see Max B again as a free man. Hopefully I’m wrong though. The last thing I want to wish is someone incarcerated for a crime they didn’t commit. That being said, the man who made “wavy” cool left behind an immense body of music to enjoy and analyze.

Between his time with Dipset, his partnership with French Montana and his own solo projects, he had more than enough music than I could ever keep up with. To many, Max is known for his penchant to hold on a grudge (see Jim Jones and Hell Rell). To even more, Max is known for creating a catchy hook in his day. Dig through the crates deep enough and you’ll find more than a handful of records to support this. One of my favorites was “Never Wanna Go Back.”

Recorded only days before the verdict was handed down, the somber and reflective track showcased a Max who was well aware of what the future could hold for him. Months prior we saw Max running around with French Montana (cracking jokes on Hell Rell), sipping Grand Gru and enjoying life. As his date with destiny fate approached, it showed in his music. Quite simply, Max’s stress level beyond apparent as he crooned he did not “wanna go back in there.” With the correctional facility being a revolving door in the first place, no one who is lucky enough to walk out the doors wants to walk back in. Unfortunately for Max, this wasn’t the case.

Not another night goes by that I don’t pray now
F*ckin’ cops screamin’ face down…
